Biodiversity day at Simon Hof
At the Day of Biodiversity 2026, funded by the Kärntner Sparkasse Private Foundation, as many animal, plant and fungal species as possible were recorded at Simon Hof in Mittertrixen within a 24-hour period. Biodiversity experts were invited to participate in the field survey and document as many animal, plant and fungal species as possible within a 24-hour period.
The survey area comprises a diverse mosaic of habitats, including cliffs, meadows, forests and agricultural land.
More than 50 experts participated in the event and recorded approximately 1,000 species based on an initial assessment. In addition to traditional taxonomic identification methods, modern approaches such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, drone surveys and AI-assisted methods for detecting birds, bats and pollinators were applied.
The results of the survey will be published in a dedicated special publication.
