A central objective of the Priority Area 6 (Biodiversity) of the European Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) is to ensure ecological connectivity on a macroregional level. The commissioned study includes a situation analysis and contributes to the identification of challenges and opportunities to strengthen macroregional connectivity. The project team analyzes actors, political frameworks, instruments, current initiatives and projects on the topic of connectivity in the region. A spatial analysis identifies “strategic” ecological corridors for “land”, “water” and “air” as well as for connecting factors for the Alps and the Carpathians. The results should work as a bridge between strategy and implementation. Recommendations for action and propositions for model projects should contribute to a concretization of the European Strategy for Green Infrastructures and the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
